Hospital Terms
Hospital terms are available at the Royal Hobart Hospital in Hobart, the Launceston General Hospital in Launceston and the North West Regional Hospital in Burnie. Accredited terms are listed here.
Advanced Rural Skills Posts (ARSP)
ARSPs are available. Currently, 2 very popular and high quality posts are in Anaesthetics, 1 at the North West Regional Hospital in Burnie and 1 at the Launceston General Hospital. Other ARSPs are arranged according to the needs of GP registrars. In recent years there have been ARSPs in Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Anaesthetics. Please contact the Director of Training if you are interested in an ARSP.
Special Skills Posts
A 6 month placement at Whittle Ward, Repatriation Centre, Hobart. GP Registrars will have access to this post every odd year commencing 2005. Physician registrars can undertake this term in even years commencing 2004. The term consists of being part of the palliative care team which provides services at the Whittle Ward, RHH and in the community. It will enable the registrar to develop skills in palliative care and participate in multidisciplinary teamwork. For the complete curriculum and job description click here.
Palliative Care
Aboriginal Health
Based at the Aboriginal Medical Service in Patrick St Hobart. This 6 month term involves providing clinic care to the Aboriginal community in Southern Tasmania. It enables a greater awareness of the cultural, social and health issues of the local Aboriginal population under the supervision of Dr Scott McKeown Ph: (03) 62313527.. A Specials Skills Post in population health at the Public & Environment Health Unit in Hobart in Dept of Health & Human Services. It is available on an ad hoc basis. Topics can include: nutrition, immunisation, refugee health, men's health, women's health, exercise, disease monitoring & toxicology. Each 6-12 month post is set up individually for interested registrars and depends on funding, availability of supervision and the areas the unit is currently focused on. Read more information.
Population Health

Expedition Medicine
The aims of the post are to:
a) become proficient in wilderness survival & wilderness first aid
b) develop expertise in retrievals and rescues
c) be competent in providing medical care to expeditions and tourists
d) be competent in aspects of travel medicine

Academic Posts
An opportunity to undertake an Academic Registrar Post at the University of Tasmania is available either in Hobart or Launceston. This is a 6 month full or part-time position done in conjunction with a GP placement. The aim of these posts is to allow registrars to develop appropriate academic skills, including planning and evaluation of teaching and research activities. Professor Mark Nelson (Hobart) (03) 6226 4734 and Associate Professor Jan Radford (Launceston)
(03) 6348 8790 will provide the registar with supervision, mentorship and feedback throughout the placement. Registrars are encouraged to prospectively discuss their plans to undertake an academic post with these university mentors and GPTT. The positions are allocated on a competitive basis. Community Paediatrics
The post in Community Paediatrics include:
In-patient paediatrics, community/outpatient paediatrics, adolescent and general practice paediatrics. It provide the opportunity to complete a Diploma of Child Health. The post is in Geelong, Victoria. Contact Dr Christine Sanderson on (03) 5221 6535.
Developmental & Intellectual Disabilities
A position in the Monash University based Centre for Developmental Disability in Health. It includes paritcipation in multi-disciplinary outpatient clinics, working with GPs, undergraduate teaching and outreach work concerning the specialty of developmental disability.
